OK, so CMK is Malawi, is that right?

You will definitely go thru Immigration (passage of people) and Customs (passage of goods) in Atlanta.

I am not sure if CDG requires you to go thru Immigration/Customs since you are transiting from a non-Schengen country to a non-Schengen country.

IF you are one one ticket (Air France/Delta I would assume), you go through customs (goods importation) in Atlanta, as your luggage should be checked through to ATL. Whether you have to go through immigration (passport control) depends on which terminal you arrive and depart from at CDG. Nonetheless, you still may have to through immigration at CDG as well as ATL.

You do not go through customs twice, only once in ATL. It is passport control that you may have to go through twice.

It is a matter of terminology. "Customs" is about the importation of goods. "Immigration" is about people, aka passport control.

Customs is a walk-through unless you have purchases to declare & that walk through or declaration will be in Atlanta.

I believe that you both arrive and depart from Terminal 2E if you are traveling on Air France (traveling on one ticket). If that is the case, you will go through customs and immigation/passport control only in the United States. As of last year, there was no passport control for this non-Schengen to non-Schengen connection on a single ticket. Now, if you have a self-made connection, you will have to go through both passport control and walk through customs at CDG and then re-enter the secured area to continue on your trip.
