going from Italy to Croatia and/or Dubrovnik to Zagreb options

I will be leaving Rome on May 26th. I was planning to go to Bologna then Venice to Istria etc. I will be going home from Zagreb on June 14th. I would like to go to Dubrovnik and of course I must return to Zagreb. Does anyone have suggestions for an itinerary? I am also open to going from Italy to Dubrovnik on the water. Thanks

I took the bus from Venice to Pula where I picked up a rental car. Using the very convenient ferry system I kind of island hopped down to Dubrovnik. You can drop the car there and fly to Zagreb.
