We have booked a cabin on a GNV Ferry from Genoa to Barcelona in late October. Reviews I have seen are just about all very terrible. Has anyone taken this ferry? Thank you--should we change to air instead?
We're doing the same - from Rome (Civitavecchia to Barcelona) in mid-October. I've taken these ferries before. They're not bad, they are ferries. Don't try to compare them to cruise companies. It's all rather functional on bord those vessels. But it'll work and I've found the cabins to be small but clean and personally I've always slept pretty well. The food is canteen-style, you get decent pizza, pasta and other foods. There are free deck chairs, great scenery, usually very nice weather... and if you'd like to get a drink you just get up and get it yourself - or you buy sodas in the on-bord grocery store and put a back-pack next to your deck chair... There isn't really any major evening entertainment. So bring a good book (it's like on a sleeper train). But you can just hang around the restaurant and bar areas and speak with fellow passengers - I quite enjoy this. Just FYI: The Baltic Sea ferries really are like cruise ships.
Thank you so much, Andreas. We greatly appreciate your comments and will take our ferry in late October! Enjoy your whole trip in earlier October and both of your cities, Rome and Barcelona!
