Global pass for extended trip

Hello! I’m wondering if it’ll be worth it to get the global pass. I looked into a car rental and For my family size it would be more expensive. I’ve got three kids five and under plus my husband. We will be in europe for six weeks. Six nights in Dublin, five near limerick, five in London. Then the rest of the time on a military post in Germany. We’ll definitely need to use the bus or train near limerick to get to the sights since we’ll be a bit away. Dublin and London I chose central locations so walking could be doable besides for a few bus trips for slightly further out places. Limerick to London will be annoying to do but thats the order we have to go in. London to the German post I was considering stopping at Frankfurt for a night to break up the travel, I also have a friend near there. I’m considering the global pass for convenience too. The fact that I wouldn’t necessarily have to reserve spots and remember tickets is a big plus in my book.

I can post a more specific itinerary if it’ll help as to what we want to see. But I’m not sure if it would be easier/better to use planes to get around from our locations, we will have luggage so a little hopper wouldn’t work. And if I get the global pass, how long for? We want to do a couple day/weekend trips while in germany but the transport on post isn’t a company that accepts the pass.

Thanks for any help, sorry if it’s long. This is my first vacation ever so I’m a bit overwhelmed lol.

Are you talking about a Eurail Global rail pass?

I am having trouble working out what rail trips you are planning on which such a pass would be valid.

  • Six nights in Dublin - city transport only, Eurail pass not valid.
  • How are you getting from Dublin to Limerick?
  • five near limerick, . . . We’ll definitely need to use the bus or train near limerick Eurail pass only valid on trains
  • How are you getting to London (fly, train+ferry+train)?
  • Five in London - city transport only, Eurail pass not valid, Get Oyster cards. No way drive in London.
  • London to the German post I was considering stopping at Frankfurt for a night to break up the travel, - Is that flying or train to Frankfurt? And where is this "German post"?

I think you need to list out your rail trips, and cost out each one with advance purchase tickets. My guess is tickets will be cheaper than a pass.
Also research German Länder Tickets. These are one-day tickets that give unlimited travel on trains and buses in a "Land" (German state). They are very good for groups (you are 5), typically €25 for the first person, and €5 for every extra person.

Hmm. Shannon Intl Airport, close to Limerick has frequent flights to London. Both Aer Lingus and BA use A320 jets, hardly hoppers. London to Frankfurt has frequent flights as well with larger aircraft.

I don't think a Global Pass saves anything in Germany. There are very good family friendly fares on DB for nearby and medium distances. You can travel any day you like spur of the moment with local network, Laender Tickets and Quer durchs Land tickets. Just travel after 9 am weekdays or anytime weekends and holidays.

Tell us the "base" and where you want to go. There are probably inexpensive ways to do it. Much less than a Global Pass.

Loose itinerary- land at almost midnight day one
2- Phoenix park/zoo, aqua zone (bnb is near the park)
3- Guinness, Dublin castle, natural history museum, Stephens green
4- Malahide Castle, tallship and famine museum
5- Patrick’s cathedral, imaginosity
6 - winter museum and grangegorman park
7- travel to castlecoNnell, I was planning by train. There aren’t any direct flights from Dublin to Shannon. I have a print out of all the rails and besides for a day trip to cliffs of Moher it looks like it goes everywhere. Also hit Bunratty that day
8- cliffs of Moher by paddy wagon
9 milk market, dream land
10 Lough gur, king johns castle
11 limerick to London. I looked up tickets on sky scanner and I can do Shannon and it’s inexpensive but it doesn’t include a checked bag and I can’t seem to figure out how much that’ll add on.
12—I haven’t planned those days yet. But we’re Wanting to do the eye, the globe, wax museum, west minister abbey, Hampton court palace, London dungeon, parliament and a couple museums and play grounds.

If we take the train back to Germany (grafenwohr) then I would want to stop in Frankfurt. If we take the plane then just go to Munich or Nuremburg or whatever is cheaper.

In Germany we want to go to neuschwanstein castle, Nuremburg, and another German city for a weekend, haven’t decided yet.

I swear when I was looking into the eurail global pass that it said it also got you access to dart? And my husband says the local trains he takes in Germany are also covered by the pass, he looked at the covered companies pdf that is posted online.

We absolutely will have checked bags. At least two but maybe three. So that’s part of my hesitation wtih the interEurope flights.

And renting a car would be over $100 a day plus gas. I have three kids in car seats, we cannot fit in a midsize car or even small suv. I already talked that part out with a U.K. based car seat safety group and relying on public transport except for the one private tour seems to be our best choice.
