Global Entry Renewal

Hello -- Question for those who have a Global Entry card -- when you renew, do you receive a new card?

I had renewed mine that had expired in summer 2021, and then pretty much forgot about it. I used the card in the GE kiosk upon returning from overseas in Sept 2021 and it worked fine, but I just noticed the card still says the June 2021 expiration date, so I assume I never received a new card. But since it still worked, is the card even necessary? Or is it mostly the facial recognition it relies on?

I sent an email to CBP, but just received an auto-reply that they are way behind in responding to emails.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thank you,

I did get a new card upon renewing a couple years ago. I had to log in to that site to then ‘activate’ it.

I recently received notification that my Global Entry card would expire in September. (It was a somewhat strange email, hard to read with very small font) But I followed the directions, logged in to my account online, answered the questions, paid my $$. Got the new card in the mail a few days later, surprisingly quickly. Had to log back in to my account to activate it, and was told to destroy the old one. Very easy, surprisingly fast.

Yes, I received a new global entry card with an updated expiration date when I renewed in 2019.

Mine expires this summer. I received an email reminder from Customs and Border Protection in December 2021, which indicated that there was a backlog and grace period. I couldn't find this on the website today, but it might explain why users may have been able to use an expired membership:

"Due to a significant increase in application volume, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is extending the grace period from 6 months to 1 year for any Trusted Traveler member who has a valid membership and who has submitted a renewal application. This means you will continue to receive full benefits for 1 year while U.S. Customs and Border Protection is finalizing your renewal application."*

My understanding was your Entry Number remains the same. And that the card was for crossings at the Southern and Northern borders, not airports.

So, it is entirely possible card can continue to work.

Did you read through the pages of FAQ?

I've never tried it, but would an expired Driver's License work getting through TSA?

GE approval is embedded in your Passport. Its your Passport that gets you in through immigration at the airport. The card is only good for North American land/sea border crossing. From their website:

CBP accepts Global Entry cards for lawful U.S. entry at land and sea ports of entry. Global Entry cards have radio frequency identification, which enables their use at SENTRI and NEXUS expedited travel lanes entering the U.S. Global Entry cards are not valid for entry into Canada via the NEXUS lanes and kiosks.

We got new cards with our renewal this year, but have never used them nor has anyone asked to see them.

Hello all -- Thanks for the responses. So everyone got replacement cards except me and valadelphia. Nice. :-)

I checked the CBP FAQ, but there isn't much info on the physical cards. I did check at the Trusted Traveler website and as noted above, the physical card isn't really necessary. My membership was extended to 2026 so I guess I won't worry about it. I could order a replacement card ($25), but then the account number would change as well so I'll just keep the old card since the acct # is still good.

Although I guess I'm assuming that an errant card can't be used for other purposes by someone........

Thank you,

Kurt

I renewed in January, but my account is still pending review, not yet approved. They say that I can continue to use my old card and number as the grace period is 24 months (so I can ignore that aspect of the card in my wallet that shows an expiration), but as someone notes, the rubber meets the road with my new passport number that was not registered with my original GE card/account; when I renewed the GE earlier this year, I supplied the new passport info, but I am still left to wonder if my actual account has been updated with that new passport. Who knows? I have no international travel plans at the moment, and I hope they get through the backlog before I do and they clear up my confusion.

This post reminded me to put in my renewal application and pay for it ($100) which I just did, thanks for bringing it to my attention,
and as noted on other posts the current grace period for completing the renewal is extended to 24 months, so long as you put in the renewal application before your current Global Entry expires. This is because of their backlog, says the website, but it also means you don't have to be in any kind of rush to arrange an in-person appointment, if one is required.

But I have to mention that there was a rubbing-salt-in-my-wounds aspect to filling out the renewal buttons and boxes on the website: it asks you to list all foreign travel you've done going back five years from now, which is April 2017, and when I flip through my passport it's a stark reminder of just how stuck at home we've been. Or me, at least.

One correction, your GE number is not embedded in your passport.

When you travel back to the U.S., your passport information is sent to the U.S. It knows who you are, what flight you are on, etc. Then, when you arrive and put your passport in, it confirms its you. (Some may remember it used to ask you to confirm the flight you were on.)

Your passport number is linked to your GE account but not actually in the passport.

I have never been asked for my GE card at an airport but can be used to show you have GE if the machines are down.

Edit #1: Got notice of my approval today (Aug 8), 8 months after applying in January.

Edit #2: My wife applied for renewal 3 days ago, was notified of approval today, So they are clearing the pandemic backlog and appear to be processing renewals much more quickly. FYI she recently renewed her passport, too, and received her new passport within 3 weeks. She did pay for expedited processing, but still we were impressed after reading the news reports and posts here about it taking months, not weeks.

I recently renewed mine and received a new card within 2 weeks. As other posters noted above, the KTN/Pass ID does not change when you renew. However, I still recommend following up with them for an updated card to be safe.

Recommend reaching out to them on Twitter via DM @DHSGov They are pretty responsive!
