Global entry cards

I am leaving for Europe on Sept 23rd this year. It's kind of calling it close to getting a global entry card. Are they worth the time it takes to get one ? Thank you

It is not a card. It is a status attached to your passport. If you travel internationally twice in I the next five years, it is worth it. You also get TSA precheck with it and that is really worth it.

Related question... if you have already have a NEXUS card, is there anything else needed Global Entry?

Yes they are def worth it. If you have an American Express card and use it to pay the fee they'll reimburse you for the cost of the card. (At least at Platnium and above not sure on other levels).

Actually, it is a real card, as well as passport status. I have one. They print the card at then of your interview, so there is no waiting for it to come in the mail. The question will be if you can get an interview scheduled quickly enough. By now you probably can. Just on online and complete the paperwork. Then indicate where you want to be interviewed. Easy-peasy.

Nexus card provides global entry and TSA prescreen and at 1/2 the price. Best for those who live near US/Canada border because of limited interview locations. Nothing else is needed for global entry.

Yes...if you travel internationally more than once every 5 years.
I joke it just allows you to wait at the baggage claim rather than in a line to have your passport stamped.
Earlier this month I returned from Europe via MSP. When I arrived at passport control I went straight to the Global Entry machine and after about the minute or so it takes to answer the questions, scan your passport and read your fingerprint I was on my way to baggage claim. Where I waited several minutes for my bag. Then I was on my way to my next flight.
I was told that the Global entry machines had been down all day and I was the first person to use them since they came back up.

I also got to wait for several hours for my connecting flight home. However there are seats in the waiting area and that beats standing in the passport check line.
I had just about the same experience at DTW earlier this year. And when I got to baggage claim my bag was the first bag to slide down the ramp. I was out of there and just got to wait for my next flight seated in a waiting area by my next gate.
I got the Global Entry after I stood in line for two hours and got to my next flight as they were about to shut the door. I will still always allow plenty of time between my flights. As there are so many other things that can make you miss a connecting flight. But sitting at your next gate is much less stressful.
Those are my stories and experiences with Global Entry. Yours might be different.

When you get Global Entry, they include the NEXUS card and TSA Pre Check through a Known Traveler ID number as part of the $100 price.

The NEXUS card is designed for quick border crossings between the US and Canada. Global Entry allows you to use the (usually) quicker line at any airport that has it available when returning to the US from other foreign countries. Not every airport has Global Entry. The Known Traveler ID number is entered into your online profile with most airlines if you have a frequent flyer program membership with them. You then get TSA Pre Check on most flights with those airlines.

Is it worth it? Yes, of course. If you fly internationally or even domestically more than just a few times a year the time savings can add up. My last return into the US I was flying with a friend. Since I have Global Entry it took me around 15 minutes to clear through and another 5 minutes for TSA to get back into the terminal for our connection. My friend does not and it took her 90 minutes to clear customs and immigration and another 30 minutes for TSA security and almost missed our connection.

Signing up for the program is easy. You do most of it online and then they notify you when you are ready to go through the in person interview. You can pick the airport and time when and where you want to do the interview. Just be careful about which airport you choose because in several the interview office is located inside the secure area and they will not issue you a security pass to get to the office. In other words, you have to be flying that day and have a boarding pass to get in for your interview. The interview process itself is quick, about 10 - 15 minutes. They did not print my card on the spot, it was mailed to me about two weeks later, but I was given my Known Traveler number and Global Entry was immediately in effect.

Mark, I don't think that the information that NEXUS is automatic if you have global entry is correct.
What is your source for this information?

Sorry, but there are a few errors in Mark's posting.

With Global Entry, you do not get a NEXUS card. However, with the Global Entry card you can use the NEXUS lanes. (When they scan your passport they'll see you have Global Entry.)

Global Entry is usually not granted on the spot. You will more than likely hear by the end of the day and then your passport is ready to go. As stated, a card will come within a couple of weeks. The card is not needed to use Global Entry. Just your passport.

I've never heard of any airport only having interviews in the secure zone. That makes no sense. One warning, don't be late for your interview. Someone was late in the group ahead of mine and was told to reschedule.

You do not have to be a member of an airline's frequent flyer program to apply or use TSA PreCheck. (When PreCheck first started they worked with the airline's FF programs to offer it first to FF's. It has since been open to the general public. When you buy a ticket online, there will be a box to put in your Known Traveler number.

TSAPrechek is only "officially" available on some North American airlines. However TSA has been known to offer it to others as well. The new TSA administrator says that practice will be done away with especially since over a million people have now signed up for PreCheck and their agents failed most of the recenr surprise security tests. Getting Precheck each time you fly is not guaranteed but you will, more than likely, get it.

I can't think of any major international airport that doesn't have Global Entry at this time. It may not always be working, but it is available. If Global Entry isn't working, you are supposed to be led to the front of the line and get priority treatment.

Is it worth it.....absolutely. If you travel once a year or less, maybe not. But any more than that and it makes getting through the airport semi-pleasurable again.

I got my GE card through the mail, but it didn't include a NEXXUS card. Things may have changed in the 2+ since I got mine. The speed with which you get your GE screening appt. will depend on where you live. It used to be you could only get them at airports, but that may have changed. If you check the website it may tell you what facilities are available in your area and the wait time for an appt.

When we came back through Atlanta in May, we were sent to the head of every line at each step.

I would not get it for one trip.

However, if you travel several times a year, the card can be a benefit. A few weeks ago on a domestic trip, there was a HUGE line (hundreds of travelers) at the regular security screening area. There were 5 people ahead of me in the TSA Pre-check area. Very nice.

TSA-Precheck is perhaps worth more to me than Global Entry since I travel more domestically than I do Internationally. And they are no longer so free giving Precheck out to people they have not screened. Last year a friend of mine got it nearly every flight despite never having applied for it. This year - zero times.

Frank II's description of Global Entry process and what is included is accurate. It is definitely worth it if you do some international travel since it is only about $20 more than just regular TSA Pre-Check. The pre-check is very much worth it in both time saved and less hassle.
