Global continuous pass

I’ve done my research and found that the global continuous pass will be best for my trip. (It looks like there’s a sale going on savings of 10% by March 21) My question is after I purchase this pass will I be instructed on how to use it when I need to reserve seats for certain trips?

Hi,

If you are a senior, an additional 10% discount can be added to the discount offer expiring on March 21. I use the Global Pass too but not the continuous one but the any 10 or 15 day in 2 months flex. Pass.

With present exchange rate plus a total of 20 % discount thanks to the promo until March 21, after just a few night train rides, which are part and parcel of my trips anyway, the Pass will have been paid for.

Would it be better for you to have the flex Pass instead of the continuous? Which countries are you using the Pass? Is your trip at least 4-5 weeks?

I always order the paper Pass, ( much easier traveling that way), which includes all the necessary info in a neat booklet.

I’m traveling to France, Italy and Austria over an 18 day period. We could easily consolidate our train trips over 15 days thou. Should we do a Global flex pass over a continuous pass?

Hi,

Keep in mind that a continuous Pass means once you activate the Pass the clock is ticking until it expires. Those travel days you don't use are gone. That's why I use the 2nd class 15 day/2 month Flex Pass since I want to determine which travel day to use until all of them are used up.

In Italy using the Pass isn't cost effective. You really don't need to. If cost is of secondary or a minor concern, ie basically not your highest priority but that of flexibility and convenience, ie, you don't want to be bothered with various regional passes, getting tickets in stations, etc. then I can see using the Pass. In Austria you can hop on and off with the Pass.

Be advised too that in France you'll might encounter the quota on Pass holders when reserving on the TGV. I have but so what, merely a minor inconvenience. I've never had to change my intended date of departure due to the Pass quota when reserving a seat on the TGV , so basically no big deal.

If you're including the option of taking night trains, say from Austria to Italy, Paris to Vienna, the Pass comes in very handy.

Thanks for all this information! Very helpful, think I’ll go for the flex pass after all. How do go about getting a paper ticket as you su? I only see mobile options.

Sorry found the options on eurail just did not see it on rail europe. Do you purchase thru eurail? The paper options don't arrive until mid may so I'll need to do the mobile pass.

Hi,

You're welcome.

When buying a Pass, I always go through Eurail to buy it on-line, always bought a paper pass, which has in the packet the following:
your receipt (obviously), the info booklet (read that carefully if you're not familiar with the "rules"), the various discounts offered by the Global Pass, night train info (very useful in taking advantage of that option). etc., etc.

On the trip I carried that Pass on my person, concealed, ie not in a day pack, travel sack, etc. which you might set down. I am not concerned about my losing it since it's in paper form, or having it and my valuables get picked....not going to happen.

Only once did I ever pay for shipping when you want the normal delivery time, ie not the "expedited" The shipping of my passes baring that one time was always free. Eurail may have changed its policy now. Once ordered on-line, my Pass arrived within one to three weeks max.

When I purchased our eurail passes our birthdates were off by one day. I was told that when I logged on in France, with the time change it would reflect the correct date. Should I attempt to change it or just leave it?

Hi,

Who told you. a staff person at Eurail? I would leave it. If you encounter any problems over there, go to the ticket counter in Paris (or where you are) , passport in hand as ID, and get it straighten out.

I did something similar but that was in Germany, showed the counter guy what had happened (the train conductor punched the line separating two travel days, ie right in the middle of 2 days. Since I didn't want to lose a travel day, I went to the Eurail counter in Munich Hbf (they all speak good English) but explained everything to the guy in German anyway, etc. He saw what I meant, wrote a note on the back of the Pass and stamped it....problem solved. For the rest of the remaining Pass travel days, no problems.

Part 2 here.....I ordered my Senior Eurail Global flex Pass, made it on time on-line to qualify for both discounts I mentioned above, ie a total of 20 %, a paper pass only (I don't need the Pass on the phone or any of the apps), but surprisingly , it won't arrive until 21 May, almost 2 months after placing the on-line order. In past years the pass would arrive in 2 weeks time.. May 21 is only the scheduled date, it could very well arrive a week earlier...who knows, makes no real difference anyway.

Another surprise is that Eurail has indeed changed its policy re: shipping. No shipping charge was attached to receiving a paper pass in the past. still no big deal.

@ Cindy....My 15 days, flex. Senior Global Pass (paper) , since I don't rely on apps, arrived today; it took just 11 days after placing the order on-line. I figured waiting two months as the order confirmation indicated was basically not realistic.

We will definitely print all our passes and reservation info just in case we have app issues. Thanks for all the helpful feedback.
