We are traveling from London to Edinburgh by the Lner train in September for a 3 week trip. From Glasgow, we want to visit Liverpool for 2 days on the way back to London. Will it be easier to fly or take the train there? If we fly what airline has good prices/times, if we take the train what trainline has good princes/times? How far in advance should we book for the best price?
Thanks for your recommendations?
According to RometoRio it’s 3.5 hours by train and 4.5 hours by plane, plus the additional time needed for getting to and from airports, security etc. So the plane is the best bet. Look at the train options from Glasgow Central. Use the National Rail website (www.nationalrail.co.uk) for timetables, booking etc.
You can look up train schedules and fares here. The train will almost certainly be easier than flying. The sooner you buy the tickets the less they'll cost.
It would be a train from Glasgow Central, with a change at Preston for Liverpool Lime Street. Other members on the forum will be able to fill in more detail and background.
There's direct coach (bus) services from Glasgow Buchanan Street Bus Station to Liverpool with a couple of different companies.
Don't fly :)
In most circumstances on the train I would change at Wigan North Western as only one Liverpool train an hour on the St Helens route extend to Preston and Blackpool. The other turns at Wigan.
Also you have the insurance of the other route from Wigan Wallgate (over the road) via Headbolt Lane if the St Helens service is up the creek.
Also Trans Pennine has one through train at 1204.
Avanti run at least hourly, sometimes twice an hour.
Whether you book it as a TransPennine or an Avanti/Northern journey the Advance fare should be under £20, on ear!y and late trains as low as £14.40.
That is before any 1/3 railcard discounts. As you say 'we' on these 3 journeys a £30 2 Together railcard should pay for itself.
There are no Glasgow to Liverpool flights. You would have to do some idiotic route to fly, likely changing in Ireland.
Rome2Rio as so often is just totally wrong.
The sooner you buy the tickets the less they'll cost.
While true, don't fall for the old 10 to 12 weeks story, spun by many, including Rick. I am frequently booking no more than 2 weeks out on the Avanti route on similar journeys and getting these bargain basement fares. That way I know I am not going to be affected by a rail strike, and having to get refunds. I have 2 upcoming journeys like this, both booked at the 2 week mark, and both at rock bottom fares. I have even got these fares at under a week's notice.
Thank you for your info. I so appreciate it.
By the way alluding to yesterday's post about buying tickets TransPennine now have 3 daily GLA to LPL services (the timetable improved in June)- at 0745, 1204 and 1611.
The 0745 from Glasgow and it's return from Liverpool at 1212 especially are very useful additions to the timetable. I've already used those to/from Carlisle several times.
