Gibraltar and Taniger

Would it be better to fly into Seville or Granada from Barcelone to get to Gibraltar and Tarifa (to tour Taniger)? I've read a post saying you can take a bus from Granada to Algeciras and make taxi etc arrangements to Tarifa. Any suggestions? Also I'm not sure on the best transportation to Gibraltar. It's our first trip to Europe, not sure renting a car is our best option.

Robin - does what I have just answered here cover some?
- http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/86223/sevilla-to-tangierstangiers-to-granada.html Algeciras to La Linea, at least, as per the TGComes bus timetable and walk across the border. 'not sure renting a car is our best option' - that will depend on where you want to go, but a car is of little or no value when visiting cities in Spain and will be a burden and extra expense with parking fees.

Make sure you go to the right port (Algeciras/Tarifa) for your ferry. Most of the ferries are now going to Tanger-Med, the new port, 30 minute drive east of Tanger. You want one that goes to Tanger-Ville. Roger

Thanks for all the good info. From what I've read it's about a 5 hr bus ride to Gibraltar. So if there a bus from Gibraltar to Tarifa? Would it be best to stay overnight in La Linea or is it possible to make the bus ride from Granada to Gibraltar (see the rock) and bus to Tarifa in one day?

Are you flying from Barcelona to Granada because you want to spend time in Granada? If not, why not fly from Barcelona to Malaga, which is much closer to your final objective of Gibraltar and Tangier? Then make your bus and/or taxi arrangements from there. I may be misunderstanding your intent...

Robin We rented a car in Madrid after travelling by train from Barcelona. The travel by bus between these towns was a nightmare and time consuming so we decided to drive. Best decision we made. Roads are super - scenery especially back in the hill towns breathtaking. Easy roads to Tarifa - we stayed in a hotel walking distance to the port to catch the boat in Tangiers. Spent the day in Tangiers with a guide and then back. Next day drove to Gibraltar (left car on street just before the border and walked into Gibraltar after customs. Took a tour bus up to the funicular as we were going to use it to go to the top and walk down. Met a taxi -man-(6 passenger van) who for the same price toured the island - took us to the caves and we explored- top of the rock to the monkies. Do this for sure. We then drove to the hill towns and finally down to Granada where we left the car at the airport and took a taxi into Granada (a bit expensive 32E) and then a train back to Madrid to catch flight home. Make car rental arrangements from home. If you need help with other info send me a private message.
