Getting your bags from one airline to another

In March of 2019, my wife and I are flying from Cairo on Egypt Air to Heathrow and then on New Zealand Air to LAX. We’re dreading that we may have to go through customs after getting our bags and then going to NZ airlines and go through security again. Has anyone flown Egypt Air and did they transfer your bags?

Thanks

Did you buy a single ticket or separate tickets?

If you are on a single ticket, your bag should be checked through to LAX. They are both star alliance partners.

If you bought separate tickets, then all bets are off.

Yep, we’re separate airlines. I thought we were out of luck. We do have a backup, we’ll stay for the night since our window between flights is so close.

Thanks for the response.

Sofitel at LHR Terminal 5 and is very nice with a great restaurant.

Check with Egypt Air. Just because you are on separate tickets doesn't preclude them from routing your checked luggage through to LAX.

BTW, you will have to go through security again in Heathrow as a transit passenger.

The Premier Inn near T4 (less than a 15-minute walk through an enclosed walkway) is relatively new and amazingly nice for the price. Booking a non-refundable room way in advance might get you something for less than £50. I paid £37.50 for a single room just a few nights ago; I booked it back in May or June. The rates are reasonable even if you are not willing to commit far ahead of time. It seems to be a large place, and I think it's not yet on every traveler's radar.
