We have a flight leaving at 7 A.M. from Toulouse to Paris. Do we need to stay near the airport (expensive) or can we get from a downtown hotel to the airport at 5 A.M. by public transportation? Or how much will a cab cost and how long will it take that time of day?

Hard and chancy, never tried it, never will. HOWEVER, there's an ETAP hotel on the airport that's less than a ten minute hoof to the terminal that will only stiff you about fourty euros. The place has no ambiance, but it's clean: etaphotel.com. If you decide on this option, let me tell you about how they handle late check-in, it takes a bit of typing and will bore non-users to tears.
