Getting to Positano

My fiancée and I will be visiting the Amalfi Coast (basing out of Positano) during the latter half of our honeymoon in early October. We will be taking the train down from Rome to Naples, and we travel light (one 45L bag each plus a shared day bag), so taking the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento would not be an issue.

Does anyone have experience hiring a car to drive from Sorrento to Positano? I know we could take the bus, and while that's the backup plan, it would be nice to be able to take a car from the train station in Sorrento directly to our hotel in Positano. Any insight into potential pricing as well as advice or recommendations on companies/drivers would be greatly appreciated.

Joe,

I'd suggest using a Taxi or bus, or arranging a private car service from Sorrento to Positano. Parking is limited in some places in Positano and having a rental car could be somewhat of a nuisance. You'd have to be sure to avoid any ZTL (limited traffic) areas, as hefty fines will result for each pass through one of those. Note that you'll also need the compulsory International Driver's Permit for driving in Italy, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L.

Thanks for the reply. I should have been more clear - definitely interested in hiring a car with a driver to transport us from Sorrento to Positano - no desire to rent a car to drive on our own and park!

In that case, you might consider the Monetti Taxi as I believe it's recommended in the guidebook. Have a great trip, and congratulations to both of you.

You can also take a bus from the station in Sorrento to the harbor and take a boat. It would be cheaper. Or you can walk 20 to 30 minutes from the station to the harbor in Sorrento.

Good move not to hire a car and drive the beautiful Amalfi Coast. Boat from Sorrento to Positano is a lovely trip. Nice to see the view from the sea. Get your driving the Amalifi Coast road 'fix' on a SITA bus when you are staying in Positano. Make sure you find time to get up to Ravello.
