I'm travelling with my husband and 2 daughters (12+14)We will be leaving La Spezia.Whats the best way to get to Milan Malpensa Airport for 5:30 am ! Any suggestions on where to stay, or can we stay overnight in the airport waiting area.Any suggestions?(on this or other experiences travelling with pre-teens)

Your best bet is probably going to be to stay at an airport hotel so that you get some sleep before your big flight, especially one for the kids to get some sleep. A while back Doug of Portland took time to compile a list of Malpensa Airport hotels, and here is that list: Malpensa hotels

It's a 3.0hr. trip to Milan from La Spezia. The last train out the night before leaves at 7:53pm and arrives in Milan at 22:50pm. Not sure if buses are running to and from the airport at that hour. I suggest that you get into Milan in the late afternoon the day before your flight and take the bus out to Malpensa. Spend the night at an airport hotel or, given Tim's link above, try to sleep on rock-hard benches.
