Getting to Jungfrau

I'll be staying in Geneva for 3 whole days. I'm planning 1 day for Geneva itself, another for Montreux and another one for the Jungfrau region. Could anyone help me out? I have two questions, basically: 1. Between the Jungfrau region and Chamonix/Mont Blanc, which one would be more spectacular? 2. Supposing the Jungfrau region is definitely more interesting than Mont Blanc, then what would be the best option to get there? I know the train is the obvious way, but it seems to be impossible to get a train that will arrive in Jungfraujoch in the morning – all the available options arrive in the afternoon. I've heard it's better to be there in the morning; is it that bad to go in the afternoon? What's the difference? Also, I've been told there is a 'better' route (a more beautiful one). I think it's called the Golden Pass route or something like that. Anyway, what would be the best way to enjoy the Jungfrau region in one day?! Thanks a lot for your help. I'm traveling soon and I really want to make the most of the Swiss part of the trip.

If you are doing this as a day trip from Geneva, Chamonix is much the better choice. It is around 3 hours to the town, then you have the fun of riding the various lifts up Aguilles du Midi and continuing if you like. To get to the Jungfraujoch is a ride of at least 5 hours each way; or closer to 7 hours if you want to go by the more scenic Golden Pass route. That would be a very long and expensive day.

Thanks =) What if I spend a night in the Jungfrau region? Is accommodation affordable? What city/village would be a good option? The problem is that I have this impression that the option to Chamonix won't be as nice... =/

They're both spectacular, but make it easy on yourself and pick an Alpine area closer to Geneva. Alpine weather is notoriously fickle. Imagine riding on a train for several hours and seeing not breathtaking mounstain vistas but only clouds and rain. It happens often. If you're going to the Berner Oberland, give yourself at least two, preferably three nights to maximize your chances of getting good weather.

My opinion, you are cramming in too much for 3 days. Forget Montreux, unless you are into music. Mt. Blanc is far better then Jungfrau, which in my opinion is over-rated, expensive, and time consuming. Rick Steves IS the EXPERT, GO EARLY, which ever one you chose. Take a train or if you wish rent a car, stop in Annecy on your way to Chamonix, spend the night in Chaminox, do Mt. Blanc early , come down and do the Luge ride in town. IF you have to go to Junfrau region consider Murren. I hope to get to Brazil soon. It's too bad you can't do both, Jungfrau vs. Mt. Blanc, Mt. Blanc would be the easy winner. You didn't say when you were going, I've only been in the summer time, June, July, and August.

Thanks a lot for your help =) I'll go there next month (mid September). Here's my plan: 09 - Arrival at night 10 - Geneva or Montreux 11 - Mont Blanc 12 - Geneva
13 - Departure So you think Montreux is not worth a visit? I really want to check the Château de Chillon, though... Also, I'm kinda into music =) As for the period of the day: I'm considering one Mt. Blanc tour offered by an agency called keytours(.ch). At first I though it was too expensive, but it turns out not many things are affordable when it comes to visiting the alps anyway. Thanks again. Castle Chillon is interesting, I think you can rent a boat or take a ride on the Lake, check what Rick says.

Unless you have a specific reason for dedicating a whole day to Geneva I suggest you take the 1st train out and begin your travels w/o wasting time in Geneva. Geneva is SUPER expensive, and I don't think you get a much in return for the high $$$$. There are many places MUCH better than Geneva.

Tim, thanks! I've heard some people say exactly the same thing about Geneva... what better places would you suggest (supposing I'm planning to spend the nights in Geneva)?
