Getting to Bavaria from Amsterdam

Hi, We are flying into Amsterdam and then are headed to Oberstaufen, Germany which is in Bavaria. What would be the best way to get there? Also, what would be the must see in the area?

Are you going to spend a few days in Amsterdam before going to Oberstaufen or do you want to get there ASAP? If the latter, what time will you arrive in Amsterdam?

Probably the fastest connection is to take the ICE train from Amsterdam to Cologne airport, then a TUIfly flight from there to Memmingen (Allgäu Airport), from where it's about a 1 hrs drive to Oberstaufen - certainly not the most convenient connection. Check with www.bahn.de: There is a 7:44 hrs rail connection departing AMS central railway station at 8.04am, arriving at Oberstaufen railway station at 3.48pm, which sounds more convenient.

We stopped for a few hours in Oberstaufen one day on our way back from Lindau to Immenstadt.

Oberstaufen is a cute little town. I liked it.

From Oberstaufen, it is a short distance by train to the Bodensee island town of Lindau. I definitely recommend going there. From Lindau you can also get to Friedrichshafen and the Zeppelin Museum. Take the train to the Friedrichshafen Stadtbahnhof, then the short shuttle down to the harbor station (Hafenbahnhof). The Museum is right at the end of the shuttle.

Another interesting place to go is the Kleinwalsertal. Kleinwalsertal is a beautiful Alpine valley, actually a little piece of Austria, but you can only get to it from Oberstdorf, in Germany. Take the train to Immenstadt im Allgäu and change there for a train up to Oberstdorf, then take the bus from Oberstdorf up to the top of the Kleinwalsertal, to the village of Baad. Great hiking.

In addition to Lee's recommendation about Friedrichshafen (Frederic's Harbor), which I definitely second: From the Stadtbahnhof train station it's about a 15mins walk along the waterfront to the Zeppelin museum. The view of the Swiss alps from there is just breathtaking!
