Getting off a train early...is this okay?

I've got a reservation for a night train from Berlin to Vienna on Thursday night. But I really want my final destination to be Melk. The "night" portion is just between Berlin and Munich and then I transfer trains to go through Austria. I'm pretty sure looking at my ticket that it says we stop at St. Poelten (I assume that's HptBahnhof). I want to get off there and buy a ticket to Melk to make my journey shorter.

Lee, if you are out there, I'm pretty sure this is what you advised me to do. I just want to run it by the board and make sure it works and that it makes sense. I can't see why OBB would care if I got off early, I just want to make sure.

Hi,

St. Poelten is a town just west of Vienna, the train's last stop before stopping at Wien Westbahnhof. You can get a ticket from St. Poelten to Melk.

That is certainly what we plan to do in Prague, since the next-to-last stop is actually much closer to our hostel than the final stop.

Yes, that is what I advised you to do. I didn't respond at first to this post so as to allow others to confirm that you can do this.

This is not an aircraft, where all seats are assigned and they go around checking to make sure you are on board. The conductor will come around sometime early in the trip to make sure you have a ticket and then will remember you and not check again. He probably won't even notice when you're not on board anymore. For all he knows, you might just be in the restaurant or the WC. Or, you might have gotten off in St. Pölten to look around and missed the train's departure (fortunately, you took your bag when you got off).
