Getting in and out of Ljubljana

I'm traveling from September 3-6 from Budapest to Venice, with a stop in Ljubljana and the Julian Alps. I'm finding that train travel in and out of Ljubljana is not really convenient (no night train from Budapest to Ljubljana, and no early morning trains that do not have a lot of train changes). Any suggestions for transportation ? I've looked at renting a car, but it seems pretty spendy ($1,000 for 3 days)

I too found Ljubljana to be a difficult place to get out of quickly. I was trying to get to Krakow at the end of a RS tour at the end of this month and found there were no quick train connections or cheap flights. The flights kept getting more expensive the longer I waited. I finally bit the bullet and bought a ticket on Lufthansa. Most flights connect somewhere else first such as Munich but at least you get there the same day. I also looked at taking the train to Klagenfurt, but the flights were just as expensive and it added a 3 hr train ride.

There are trains from Ljubljana to Venice. It's a 7.0-9.0hr. journey. Most runs have a 40-min bus/taxi transfer. However, there is an 11:47 run from Ljubljana Zalog that routes through Villach Austria that takes 7.0hrs and avoids the bus/taxi.

We took the train from Ljub to Budapest last July--record breaking temperatures (40 degrees C.). We went through Slovenia (some go through Zagreb) and had a lot of stops but no train changes (7 am - 4 pm). If you take the train, check carefully if you need to bring food and beverages with you. Our IC train had no food and no air conditioning--I would not recommend this section during the day if it's hot! Check out flights on Skyscanner. Flights on Malev Air are available for approx. $560 which isn't cheap but it's less than your car rental! Flying from BUD to Trieste might be a good option--SkyEurope has a fare for 4990 HUF including taxes (about $31 USD) on Sept. 4. You could rent a car from there to tour the Julian Alps and Ljub.

Good luck!
