The best way I found seems to be flying ryanair from Venice Treviso to Brussels Charleroi and the train 3 hrs to Amsterdam. Am I missing another more direct route?

Transavia has one daily direct flight between Treviso and Schiphol. Booked well in advance, tickets are cheap.

I'm sure KLM flies direct from Marco Polo Venice to Amsterdam Schipol Airport. While KLM isn't a discount airline, when you take into consideration the expense and hassle of getting to/from Ryanair's remote airports, it probably won't cost much more. Consider purchasing a round-trip ticket and "throwing away" the unused portion.

Wow, Transavia looks perfect. I had actually wanted to do 2 nights or so in Salzburg after Venice and they fly direct to Amsterdam from there as well. Question though, on the route from Venice I am able to see my dates in May. From Salzburg, they only show dates til March. Any idea why this would be?

It's only a guess, but I expect that Transavia is going to discontinue its Salzburg-Amsterdam flights.
