I am signed up for the Village Italy tour April 22-May 5. I've been looking at flight options for 2 months, but I'm still gathering information. For anyone who has been on this trip,
1) what is the best way to get from the airport to Padua? I'm considering flying from DFW-Heathrow-Venice, but the flight doesn't get into Venice until 4:45 pm. Train schedules aren't out this far in advance and I'm having some difficulty googling bus information in English.
2. How long does it take get from Lake Orta at trip's end to Milan Malpensa?
3. Also, has anyone flown Air Italy? Not that I really want to fly from Miami or JFK, but the price is good. However... it looks like they only offer Economy and Business. I prefer Premium Economy for the leg room and more seat incline for long flights. There is a premium option in Economy but it looks like it gives you advance seating ability-no mention of more space. That would be a DFW-MIA-MXP with train to Padua (would probably spend the night in Milan).
I may end up with AA or British Air after all. Again, just trying to gather a lot of information about transportation options.
Thanks so much for advice.
We are also on this tour (same dates).
I have been having trouble finding flights into Venice. Therefore, we will be flying into Milan and probably staying overnight there. On the next morning, we will probably take a train from Milan to Venice and stay a few nights before the tour starts. At the end of the tour, we will probably go to Milan, stay overnight, and proceed home from there.
Here is a link to an article about Air Italy: https://skift.com/2018/07/16/newly-named-air-italy-is-ready-to-take-on-troubled-alitalia/
Note that Air Italy only has nine airplanes.
See you on the tour.
- How long does it take get from Lake Orta at trip's end to Milan Malpensa?
google maps has it at about an hour drive. If you plan to fly out the day the tour ends, I would be looking at a "PM" flight time. I dislike getting up at "0'dark ugly"
Thirty days before departure, you'll receive instructions on travel to/from the first and last hotels, which includes this option from Venice airport: "Buses to Padua depart hourly throughout the day. The trip takes about an hour. A ticket costs around €8.50 from the machines at the platform outside the arrivals hall, or €10 if bought from the driver." Current schedule is here for line 15 by FSBusItalia.
Also, "Your guide will help coordinate transfers from Orta to airports and train stations at the end of the tour. From Orta, it’s easiest to depart from Malpensa Airport rather than Linate. It's best to book your flight from Malpensa no earlier than 10:00am on the last day of the tour. Taxis make the 45 minute trip to Malpensa for around €95 for up to 4 people. Bus options may be available, but there is generally no direct bus from Orta to Malpensa." There are trains, but not very direct. See also this recent thread.
Thank you, Laura. That’s very helpful information that I can use to book flights in the next few months.
