Getting from Sarlat to Carcassonne

We plan to visit Sarlat in March 2012, and from there, travel to Carcassonne. We are travelling by train. Unfortunately, there appear to be only two daily departures, Sarlat-Carcassonne, both taking a very long time, and only one arriving before dark. As an alternative, we're thinking of hiring a guide in Sarlat when we depart, for a 1/2 day tour, ending in Cahors about 30 miles away. Then, we would have a much better train connection to Carcassonne. Wondering if anyone has done this or something similar when travelling from Sarlat to Carcassonne, and whether you would recommend it.

According to the German Rail site, you can take a bus from Sarlat to Souillac, departing at 11:42 and arriving at 12:23. You can take a train from Souillac to Carcassonne, departing at 14:26 and arriving at 17:41. If taking a longer ride is worth it to you to get to Carcassonne an hour earlier, you can go Sarlat-Le Buisson-Agen-Carcassonne, departing at 07:05 and arriving at 16:32. The Sarlat-Le Buisson leg is on a bus.

One further note: Before you go any farther, be aware that weekend timetables may vary a bit from the ones I gave in my previous post. And there may be no bus service at all on Sundays.
