Getting from Orta San Giulio to Siena

I'm trying to weigh my options for getting from Orta San Giulio to Siena in a single day. My Village Italy tour ends on a Sunday morning in Orta, and I want to be in Siena at a reasonable time that evening.

I've looked at train schedules, and there are relatively few departures from Orta (one around 8am, and then none until around noon) on Sundays. So that got me to thinking. What about renting a car, one way, picking it up in Stresa and leaving it in Siena?

Thoughts about the relative cost (two travelers)? Convenience or availability of cars? Difficulty handling Italian roadways?

Which option makes the most sense?

I've been to Orta twice; both times with a rental car, so I can't speak from experience about the train. A one-way single day rental car is going to be expensive. If there is an 8:00 train from Orta on a Sunday morning, I'd catch that. It will likely go to Novara and then you have options from there.

Alternatively, you'll likely be on the tour with people trying to get to Malpensa airport. The RS tour shop promises they try to arrange for shuttles. The car rental agencies at the airport are likely to be open on Sunday if you want to try that option. I'd be surprised if car rental agencies in Stresa will be open.

And, by the way, I curse the day ETBD selected Orta as a destination. It is truly a "back door".
