Getting from Malpensa to Domodossola

We will be spending several days in Domo before continuing on our trip Venice, Florence, leaving from Rome. I need suggestions whether we should go straight from the airport or if we should stay o/n in Milano. Having trouble figuring how long that trip would take. And where would be a convenient place to overnite if we stay in Milano
Tnx

BTW this will be in Sept.

There are scheduled buses to Gallarate station where you get trains to Domodossola. If you want to go Milan, the Hotel Berna is outstanding as well as reasonably priced and an easy walk from Centrale. The Metro station is just at the end of the block to go elsewhere in Milan.

Tnx. I was sure I had taken the train to Domo from Centrale on another trip. I really would have been wandering if you hadn't posted this !!!

nanc,

It's an easy trip from Malpensa to Domodossola, if you wanted to go there directly. Take the Malpensa Express to Milano Centrale (~52M) and then transfer to the train to Domodossola (~1.5H depending on which train you connect with). You can buy your rail tickets for the entire journey at the airport station. One point to note is that the Malpensa Express has two destinations, Milano Centrale or Milano Cadorna, so be sure you board the correct train.

There are several types of trains used on the Domodossola route, and if the train you use is a Regionale you MUST validate your tickets prior to boarding the train or you'll risk hefty fines, which will be collected on the spot!

You can see all the train solutions at Trenitalia.com or Bahn.de.

As the first reply points, MXP airport is close to Gallarate station - ten minutes or so by taxi or shuttle bus. Gallarate is on the line between Milan and Domodossola; not all trains stop there, but there is no need to go all the way to Centrale just to to backtrack on a different line.

There are also 4 connecting trains every afternoon at 13:50, 15:50, 17:50, 19:50 taking the S-30 train from Malpensa and changing to a Regionale at Busto Arsizio. Takes 2 hours and 12 minutes.

Just had a brainstorm. As it is now, I will travel to Zurich, change plane to Milan, take train to Domo, and probably stay o/n in milan.

How about if I traveled just to Zurich, stayed o/n, took train to domo? Would that save me time and money?

And is it still just as good to travel 2 nd class on the train???

Really appreciate the info I get here. Tnx

It'll take you 3 to 4 hours and cost you 98 chf. If that works for you, do it. Depending on your landing time, I'd say just head to Domo straight away.

The inexpensive seats I found on SwissAir are gone. Now I am looking at airlines again.

I see that United flies straight to Milan from NY. What is the airbus like? crowded? Also, I see that for a price I can pick the type of seat I want. Going with son who is a little tall, so that would be a plus.

Any other suggestions? Is this too early to think about booking my tickets??? We are going in Sept.

This should be easy to do. I am concerned that leaving from California we will really be bushed when we get to Milan. trying to make things as easy as possible on our bodies :))) I have made this trip before but from the bottom up and by myself. It was easy to plan. It is just getting to Domo that I am concerned about this time. aauugghhhhh
tnx

I went Newark-Milan in December and United is still using the old 767. Has 3 seats in the middle rather than the 330's 4. 2 seats together and one of you is bound to have an aisle seat. What is the arrival time? The fact that there are connecting trains in the afternoon should make it easy.

nanc,

" What is the airbus like? crowded?"

Each airline configures the seating arrangement in aircraft in their fleet according to their own requirements. Thus the seating in an Air Canada Airbus may be different than that of a United Airbus. The answer will depend on which which aircraft you travel on and which seat(s) you choose. You could select exit row seats or seats right up against a bulkhead, as those will provide extra leg room. However, many airlines have started charging extra for those (any way to squeeze a bit more money out of the travelling public). The bulkhead seats are usually closer to the WC, so more traffic there. Of course, for the ultimate legroom you could fly business class.

There's no way to predict whether it will be "crowded" but in my experience lately, flights abroad have been full and there's always at least one screaming infant.

This is what I have just found.

UA to EWR, to ZUR to MXP
Swisair from EWR to MXP
$1078
leaving LAX 9am arriving MXP 10:35
Those times sound great. If I take the flight with 1 stop, I get to MXP late in the afternoon.

Does this sound like a decent price or should I hold on and wait to see if it drops. We will be flying home open-jaw from Rome so I know it will be more.

Just deciding if I should go ahead and buy the tickets for Sept now or wait. Sept is not considered a shoulder month in Italy anymore.

I really appreciate this forum. Once I get started with my fllight I can go ahead with all the rest :)))

tnx much

I think you should grab it. $1078 is a pretty good price from LA these days.
Edit. Check Trenitalia.com, there is a train at 11:50, a bus at 12:46, and a train at 13:50, all connecting to regional train at Busto Arsizio to Domodossola. Schedule may change a bit when September rolls around.

heh heh heh *I bought the tickets at a hgher price. Going Open Jaw is almost like buying double dound trip, Bit it is done. Now I hvae to plan my itinerary.

Going straight from the airport to Gallarte to Domo sounds good. Domo is a great little town and we can wander, or eat and then sleep until the next day when we go up the mountain.

Is there a way that I can be notified when there is a response to my thread, or a thread I have piarticipated in? That would be nice.

Thanks, everyone, Now on the planning the fun part!!!!!

Shuttle Bus or taxi from MXP airport to GALLARATE train station (~ 7 miles). Less than 15 min by taxi (about 25 euro) or 25 min by bus (1.50 euro).
Shuttle bus timetable is below:
http://www.airpullman.com/altri/saco/ORARI%20GALL-MXP-CASTEL.%20DAL%2001.03.14.pdf
you could also go to Gallarate from MXP with a train, via Busto Arsizio. Then at Gallarate you would need to transfer to the train to Domo.
http://www.trenord.it/it/orari/consulta-orario-ferroviario.aspx

Then Train from GALLARATE to DOMODOSSOLA. Train timetable below:
www.trenitalia.com

Going to Milano Centrale first then backtracking to Domodossola would be insane. Trains from Milano C. to Domodossola pass through Gallarate.

Looks like it will be tight, maybe too tight.
ARR Milano 8:40 a.m.
Train from Gallarte Sta. to Domo lvs at 11:05am, next one at 7pm something.
Customs will take time ....... afraid won't make it.
does anyone know about the bus from MXP to Domo? I took that from Domo to MXP several years ago.
where can I find that schedule?

We will have only carry-on luggage.

Or doesn't look too tight to you???

tnx so much
