We will be four senior ladies traveling and want to go to Aberdeen Scotland to visit the area where our grandfather was born. Would it be an interesting trip to train there and just stay in a motel or fly there as a time saver. Most of our travel in Scotland will be in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Trains run once/hour directly from Edinburgh to Aberdeen. The trip takes 2 1/2 hours. When you factor in the time it takes to get to and from airports, check in, and go through security, taking the train will be faster than flying - and a whole lot cheaper.
I would definitely take the train! If you're going into the countryside you may find that you need to rent a car, but check into busses. It's beautiful countryside in Aberdeenshire. There are lots of castles.
Mollie, Here is a list of Castles in Aberdeenshire, in case you are interested. Click on the name of the castle for more information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Castles_in_Aberdeenshire Balmoral is beautiful; it is the vacation home of the Royal Family. Sometimes it is open in the summertime to tourists; check their website. Drum Castle is also lovely. My great grandfather was also born in Scotland in this area. Have a great trip. http://www.balmoralcastle.com/admissions.htm
