Hi all,
I will be traveling in late August from Dubrovnik to Vienna. I am trying to find a cheapish solution to get there since I need to be there before the 28th for a meeting with a voice coach. I am travling alone and am a female! I am not sure where to look! I tried eurorail to no avail, and there are too many expensive flights to Vienna. Any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate any advice!
Hi Lori. Germanwings (connect in Cologne) currently 159 euros on August 26. (For discount flights, see site whichbudget.com).
Enjoy your trip!
I don't think there is a cheap or easy solution. This problem comes up frequently on this board: Croatia simply does not have good links with other countries, even the ones it's right next to (and it doesn't share a border with Austria). And Dubrovnik is at the very tip of the country. Google Maps shows this as a 10 hour drive; their times are usually very optimistic, and it will be even longer by mass transit. Dubrovnik has no rail station. (And even if it did have one, Eurail only shows trains that it sells tickets for, at a mark up, so that's NEVER the placed to look. Use http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en for rail schedules). Split has a station, so you'd have to take a bus from Dubrovnik to Split (I believe that's 4 or 5 hours - not sure), then the train. A quick search shows that trains take over 16 hours and involve a night train. I then tried bus, via the Eurolines site http://www.eurolines.com/. But this doesn't seem to work, as I couldn't even get it to show buses for Dubrovnik to Zagreb, which the site specifically says is a route they run. Someone else may know a better site for bus schedules, but be prepared for quite a marathon journey. Most likely, you'd have to go from Dubrovnik to Zagreb, then catch another bus from Zagreb to Vienna. For flights, try http://www.skyscanner.com/. A quick check on August 27 shows the cheapest flight is a nonstop on Croatia Air, for $288. In a market with little competition, for a flight less than 2 months away, that's to be expected. I didn't look at other dates, but you should - assuming you will have lodging in Vienna if you arrive earlier. Sorry to be the bearer of the bad news. At least I hope I've given you some leads.
