We are visiting Croatia in 2010 and would like to know the quickest, easiest and cheapest way to get the Athens (so we can see the Greek Isles) from Dubrovnik or Split. So far it seems we will have to drive back to Belgrade to catch a flight to Athens. Any ideas anyone?
Hi Sam,
I found this article--don't know if it will be helpful--looks like a difficult connection to make:
Croatia to Athens Options
Good luck with your planning!
Sam - Honestly the best way is by plane. Buses, trains, Ferries are available but require transfers and/or a fairly long journey of about 800 miles.
Sorry - Forgot to mention that you should backtrack to Belgrade.
Enjoy Dubrovnik - It's a fascinating place - Be sure to walk the wall!
Greg
Even by plane, when I look at www.whichbudget.com I don't see any flights from Croatia to Greece.
It is maybe better now than 5 or 10 years ago, but the two main issues are still there: Both Greece and Croatia are primary vacation destinations competing for travellers, so there is no real need for easy transport between them. Secondly, Albania and Macedonia have created somewhat of a roadblock between the two, both traditionally being countries not recommended for travel. Albania is opening up though, and there are some bus routes through the country, but most descriptions I have seen look to be more than the casual traveller is up for. If I were making the trip, I would consider a budget airline from Croatia to a Western Europe airport, then another hop back to Athens. Consider Rome, maybe some airports in Germany, even London (Yes, that seems out of the way, but it may be very cheap compared to other options). My seconf option would be a ferry to Italy, then fly from there.
