I want to save money and get to Athens from our cruise
ship without using their $58.00 bus- what is the connection from the dock to the metro at Piraeus like?
If you search on Athens subway you'll find previous posts on this. You can take it right downtown from Piraeus.

The station for the metro is right across the street from the docks. However, I do believe that the docks for cruise ships are a bit further away, but still within walking distance.
I suggest you take the metro which should cost much less than the bus. Athens has a very fast, extensive and efficient system.
The subway is a great choice. One caution however, depending upon where you cruise ship docks and how many suitcases you have, it might be too long a walk to the station (Approx 1 mile). We arrived at the Piraeus cruise terminal in May and were advised to take a taxi. The taxis were lined up at the curb and I asked the fare and he wanted 20 Euro ... for 1 mile! The next taxi quoted the standard 3 euros. We found the same to be true in Athens. What we learned? ... always verbally agree on the fare before you begin your taxi trip in Greece.
