I am traveling alone and it is difficult for me to lift my very light suitcase. My question is should I fly or could I take the train between Amsterdam and Paris? Is the train ride one can see the countryside and enjoy the views from, making it worthwhile? Is baggage handling a problem on the train? Any suggestions? Thank you.
I think you have a problem either way. Yes, you have to carry your own luggage on and off trains, and sometimes up and down stairs (not at Paris Gare du Nord unless you want to access the métro, and I suspect a big station like Amsterdam Centraal would have lifts and escalators). But, at airports you also have to transport it from the entrance to check in, and from luggage reclaim to the exit. This is a similar or longer distance.
I hope you have got a case with wheels, which will mean you won't have to lift it very often.
Trains have overhead racks, larger than those on planes, but also ground level. storage. And if you ask a neighbour nicely you can usually get somebody to lift your luggage up to the rack and down again.
CONCLUSION: For ease, not to mention speed and an altogether more comfortable environment, I would recommend the train. Flying you also have to get to and from the airport, which is more schlepping.
And, how do you propose to get do the final leg to and from your hotel? If you have luggage problems this will have to be a taxi.
P.S. for info about luggage on trains, see this webpage: http://seat61.com/luggage-on-european-trains.htm
Amsterdam to Paris by train is as quick a 3 hours and 20 minutes. I'd definitely take the train. Many trains have storage for bags at the end of the car, right on the ground, so you might be able to just push your bag there. That still leaves the issue of getting up the step onto the train, which I can't weigh in on...I've never taken that route...maybe someone else can weigh in on availability of help.
Dee,
On that route, travel via high speed train (Thalys?) is absolutely the best choice. Travel by air will take longer (when all is considered), and you'll still have to deal with your luggage (as well as the usual stressful airport hassles). Taking the train will also be much more pleasant and relaxing, and you will be able to enjoy the scenery during the trip.
There are usually only about 2-3 steps to board the train, and you may be able to leave your "very light" (small?) luggage under your feet. If you need to put the luggage on the rack over your seat, you may be able to enlist the aid of a "helpful individual".
If you don't want to rely on other passengers, you can also make an advance request for boarding assistance at the train station.
Train for sure. If you do have issues getting it on and off the train, people will almost always be willing to assist. Or a staff person can probably help.
Thank you all for your help. Train, it is. I have wheels, will ask for help if needed. THANKS!
Dee bring a snack on the train, many people do , picnic, and yes you can bring on liquids!
Train food is not good and we were on Thalys about a month ago and I stood in line for food for about a half hour!!!
Good tip. I will.
