Getting 'car sick'

Hello, fellow travelers! I may be taking the bus from Lugano to Tirano, where I will catch the Bernina Express. My concern is that I tend to get motion sick while driving, especially when I sit in the back of a car, winding back and forth through the mountains. Is the bus ride from Lugano to Tirano 'hurl' worthy? Francesca

Francesca, Although the road does curve a bit in parts, you'll be travelling in a larger Coach which doesn't usually get up to a high speed. There's also one stop along the way at a small coffee shop, where the Driver takes a break and passengers can use the washroom or get a coffee. I didn't find the trip "hurl worthy", but perhaps the motion just didn't affect me that way. One question though - when is this trip taking place? As I recall, the Bus from Lugano only operates from 29 March – 20 October. You won't have any trouble spotting the Bus - it's bright yellow! Happy travels!

Frencesca, you could minimize your discomfort by reserving a seat in the first row of the bus so you can look ahead out the windshield. go on the Bernina Express website and go th "shop" where there will be a link for reserving seats on the bus: http://www.rhb.ch:8080/pls/htmldb/f?p=151:1:1205498314981552::NO::: They have a diagram of the seats, showing the position of the driver and the direction of travel. I checked a date in April and all the reservable seats (in the first two rows) were still available. I don't know how much beyond that you can book. When are you traveling?

Have you ever tried the patch you put behind your ear for motion sickness? Any time I fly and the plane hits turbulence I start to get really nauseated. Several years ago while traveling with a gall stone my doctor gave me the patch to help and it worked wonders! I now have a regular prescription for it and wear one every time I fly.

Thanks to all who replied. I appreciate your suggestions. I have, in fact, used the behind the ear patch while flying and it's worked wonders for me. Sitting at the front of the bus would be good, too. Again, thanks for you ideas. Francesca

I can be a bit of a hurler too and it sounds crazy but I have found that having a fresh orange or mandarin to Smell, seems to settle my stomach. You can eat it too, but its the smell of the peel that seems to calm me down.

My daughter does well with Sea Bands. They are stretchy bands with a little bead in them that puts accupressure on a pressure point on the inside of your wrist. You can buy them at drugstores, and I think hers cost around $12. She has used them on planes and on a bus tour in Costa Rica.

A major component of car sickness, at least for some people, is not the actual motion but the visual cues- things moving past your visual field in the side windows. It can help to look straight ahead instead of to the side. After all, you probably do not get carsick when you are driving yourself. That is why I suggested reserving the front seat where you can look straight ahead, out the windshield, not to the side.

As a person with a history of 'car sickness' you will be just fine with the bus. We did this trip in April this year. As Ken pointed out it is a reasonably large coach and doesn't reach very high speeds. As advised check out the schedule for the time of year you will be travelling. I did this through the Swiss Rail site. Also, the bus we took wasn't yellow. It was red and white with Bernina Express signage on the side.
