If your goal is Italy then I suggest you get a discount airline flight from Fra to Italy then train around Italy. www.whichbudget.com or www.skyscanner.com can guide you to airlines that go the Germany Italy route cheaply. However if you stay nr FRA the Rhine/Mosel area is terrific, scenic and w/ historic castles.

Yes, from Frankfurt visit the Rhine river gorge, the Mosel river valley, Cologne, Heidelberg, Marburg... all easy day-trips by rail. From Frankfurt there are several direct bullet trains per day to Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Munich and Zurich. To get to Italy by train you'll have to change in Zurich. However, there are direct night trains from Munich to Northern Italy ( CityNightLine).

As of last fall, there were NO budget flights from Munich to Italy...ANY Italian city...that didn't first go to London, etc. Ugh. Oh, Lufthansa was direct...for $750! Now Frankfurt to Italy...could be different. We ended up taking the train Andreas mentioned - you can travel during the day OR night. It could be quite cheap if you can commit to an advance purchase online. To look at trains and the route, go to DBBahn.com. (basically where Andreas sent you)

FRA to Italy flights: It really depends on how far in advance you book. You can actually get one-ways on Lufthansa for €99... The alternative, of course, is Ryanair from Hahn (they call it Frankfurt, but it's actually "Mosel River International"). From Hahn you can get to almost any part of Italy from €9 one-way (not including any luggage, food or beverages, check-in fees, early-boarding fees, credit card fees etc.)
