Hi everyone, My wife and I are planning a March 2013 trip to Germany and Switzerland. We were thinking of flying into Zurich and taking a train to Murren and staying 2-3 nights then taking the train to Munich, where we will stay for the remainder of our trip (4-5 days) while taking a day trip to Fussen. I have a couple of questions to the experienced travelers in the group. First, do you agree with our travel route of starting in Zurich and ending in Munich? Second, is there a better airport to fly into if we are planning to stay in Murren in Switzerland? Third, and this is the most intriguing, how do we get to Murren from Zurich? Is there a direct train? Similar question, what's the best way to get from Murren to Munich? I appreciate any help or insight you can provide. This is my second trip to Europe (first was to Denmark) and this is my wife's first time so I want this to go as smoothly as possible. Thanks in advance for your help,
Matt
" how do we get to Murren from Zurich? Is there a direct train?" There isn't even a direct train from Interlaken to Zürich. You'll have to change in Bern or Luzern. To get from Mürren to Interlaken Ost, you take one train from Mürren to Lauterbrunnen, then another from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken Ost. Use the German Rail (Bahn) website to find routes and schedules. Note: the town is Mürren or Muerren, not Murren, and it's Zürich or Zuerich, not Zurich.
"...Use the German Rail (Bahn) website to find routes and schedules. Note: the town is Mürren or Muerren, not Murren, and it's Zürich or Zuerich, not Zurich..." You're better off using the Swiss Rail site: http://rail.ch The Swiss Rail site will accept the spelling of "Murren" and "Zurich".
you take one train from Mürren to Lauterbrunnen Actually it is a train to Grutschalp and a cable car down to Lauterbrunnen in the valley. The cable car has been in place for a few years now and replaces a previous funicular.
No, it's not difficult to get to Mürren. Yes, there are a few train changes along the way, but that's just the nature of train travel...and the Swiss really have train travel down to a science! Mürren, Neuschwanstein, Munich are 3 of my favorite destinations. Instead of training all the way to Munich and then backtracking to do a daytrip to Neuschwanstein why don't you just spend a night near the castles and see this beautiful area? It really deserves more than a quick run through. We always stay in the little town of Horn Schwangau with a beautiful view to the castles. A rental car is ideal in this area, but not totally necessary. There are lots of green pastures and cows with their bells tinkling and bike paths. The little hotels and B&Bs dotted around the area are quaint and homey. From here you can do and easy easy trip to Castle Linderhof which is really a sight to see. From there continue on to Munich. If you still want to do a day trip from Munich head to Salzburg and take in one of the Salt Mines. great fun!
