Germany rail pass or not?

I will be traveling in Germany for about 3 wks with my 11 yr old son. I see kids travel free on a parents ticket. Does this apply with German railpass also? I figured out my point to point in Germany and a country pass would be cheaper unless I have to buy one for my son also. Travel area is Frankfurt to Cochem-Bacharach-rothenburg-Munich-Salzburg and back to Munich and down to fusses depending on which way is cheaper from Salzburg. Thanks!

Have you priced out your itinerary on line using the Deutsche Bahn website, or the RS Europe TTBD? The RS book is not accurate given that DB offers savings fares. If your itinerary is set, buy nonrefundable tickets in advance, or use local transport with "Laender" tickets. I've done a similar itinerary and saved significantly buying point-to-point over a rail pass.

If you buy a railpass, your son will not travel free. However, he can get a pass that costs half the price of yours. You'll do much better buying point-to-point tickets. For example, if you book Frankfurt-Cochem well in advance (up to 92 days allowed) on the German Rail site, you can get a discount fare ticket for €19.00 and your son will ride free. As Sam indicated, those tickets re non-refundabl and non-exchangeable so be sure you can commit before booking. You can get the same fare for Munich-Salzburg on a Railjet train. That's even cheapr than a Bayern-Ticket which wold cost €22.00 for you and an additional €4.00 for your son. And you would be limited to regional trains and would have to depart after 09:00 on weekdays (anytime on weekends).
