Hi All,
I am thinking about travelling to Istanbul this summer, in addition to my regular trip to Germany, but I don't know what rail pass would be the most affordable choice. I really like the train. Are there ferries involved? Thanks for any insight. Sara
I just looked at bahn.de for you. I just put in Munich to Istanbul. Prices aren't listed, probably because it connects to other country's train systems. Looks like it'll take a minimum of 40 hours on the train, no ferries. Depending on where in Germany, it could be more than 2 days by train. There was also a note at the bottom saying that the border crossings are prolonged stops, meaning they may go through and actually check every person's passport/papers on the train. Could be quick, could be longer than you hoped. Although you really like the train, can you stand being on one non-stop for 40-50 hours or more? Also, since you're going through multiple countries, you need to check with the Department of State for the country you're a citizen of to find out travel regulations through those countries. An affordable choice may be a quick intra-Europe flight.
a lot of budget airlines fly to istanbul from all over Germany. even if you like the train that is going to be a very long and unpleasant trip. maybe you could work your way partially eastward and then fly the rest of the way? i really love the OBB railjet thet originates in Frankfurt or Munich. You could go to Vienna through Austria, then take a direct GermanWings flight to Istanbul. Lowest prices seem to be about 110 Euro. That way you get a nice, long, comfy train ride with some nice scenery without the hassle of that daunting 40 hour ride. as for what rail pass, are you going to be doing a lot of long haul trips in Germany? a railpass only pays if you do.
