Germany/Italy discount airlines

My niece and I will be travelling to Italy and Germany. We are looking to fly out of Venice to Munich and back into Rome. I have found in past trips that it is usually cheaper to fly using that countries airlines. Does anyone know of a good German or Italian airline to use? Also I was reading about suggestions on this website about buying train tickets ahead of time. We have also gotten conflicting info from Rail Europe. I was told that I had to buy a rail pass in order to get the train tickets that require reservations. My niece was told that we can just buy the reservations. When I travelled around Spain I think I bought a railpass and then had to buy reservations for the AVE trains and feel like I wasted a lot of money. We were going to go ahead and purchase point to point tickets ahead of time and not get the railpass. It is rumored that buying ahead of time gives a discount. This sounds like it may not be true. Any advice on train tickets would be helpful too.

Thanks,

Jenny

The country's airlines do not make a difference in fares. When you research all the airlines which fly that route you will find that fares will vary from day to day and month to month. Use the line's toll free phone number to ask.

They change daily on some airlines depending on empty seats. I usually phone five or six lines to compare fares for any one week.

Be flexible when you ask for fares by asking for the lowest fare for a particular week, not by day. Give the agent some flexibility in searching for your fare. Often in the past I delayed departure by a week and saved hundreds of dollars.

Best sites to check for discount airfares are www.whichbudget.com and www/flylc.com . In the latter's case, you may be taken to the "bravofly" website. Instead, find the airline that looks good for the route, and go to its website directly...virtually all are in English these days. Be aware of ticket refund and change conditions, strict baggage allowances (and huge charges for overweignt), and check-in times.

One more good search engine for budget airlines in Europe is www.skyscanner.net.

If you have a railpass and want to take a train that requires reservations, then you will have to pay for that reservation. If you buy a point-to-point ticket for a train that requires reservations, the reservation is included in the price of the ticket.

If you book train tickets well in advance on a country's national rail site--and not on Rail Europe--you often can get discount fares. However, the allotted discount tickets are limited and they are not available on all routes or on all types of trains.

On train options, Venice to Munich takes 7.0hrs-8.0hrs. Standard 2nd class fare, as shown on Trenitalia, is 80Euro. There are about 7 runs on a regular day including one night train. Two of the runs, including the night train, have no train changes. The remainder have one train change in Verona.

On your second flight, I am assuming that you intend to fly from Munich to Rome. On the train, this is a 10hr.-12.0hr journey depending on the run you select. Trenitalia shows a standard 2nd class fare of 125.10Euro. You could do much better fare wise and time wise on one of the inexepensive airlines. www.airberlin.com flies this route.
