Germany - Bavaria transporation....so confused!

I'm trying to plan a few days in Fussen and would like to go to Zugpspite and Mittenwald and back to Fussen. It seems due to the Alps train travel is very long even though these areas are not that far apart. Can anyone give me very specific bus /train directions. Perhaps a car rental is the best way.

Please advise.

Probably the best way to get to Garmisch-Partenkirchen from Fuessen is to take the bus (RVO 9606) via Oberammergau. This is the same bus that goes from Fuessen Bahnhof to Hohenschwangau (from Hohenschwangau it goes on to Oberammergau and GaP. Most are direct connections; some connections have a change of buses at Echelsbacher Brücke). The German Rail website can show you schedules. You can also see the schedule here.

There are hourly trains from Garmisch to Mittenwald (22 min).

You might also take the bus from Fuessen to Reutte, Vils, or Pfronten and the train from there to Garmisch.

Thanks for the tips! How do you read that bus schedule, btw?

Just like you read any other transit schedule in the world. The column on the far left is a list of stops. Each column is one bus connection and the times in that column correspond to the time (in 24 hr format) that bus stops at that stop. If the times go down to a stop and then continue in the next column, it indicates that there is probably a change of buses at that stop.

Page 1 says "Garmisch-Partenkirchen - ... - Füssen". Those are the buses from GaP to Füssen on workdays (Montag - Freitag ausser Ferientag [Monday - Friday except recognised holiday]). Page 2 is Füssen to GaP on workdays. Page 3 and 4 are for Saturday (not holiday) and Sundays/Holidays.

On page 2 you see a bus leaving Füssen Bahnhof at 8:05 and going straight through to GaP Bahnhof (Bf) at 10:13.

Thanks! That makes sense! I don't take buses so never seen a bus schedule. I'm not an urban person. LOL!

Thanks for your help!

The trains in southern Bavaria run radially out from Munich, so sometimes, if using only rail, it's necessary to connect in Munich to get between two towns south of Munich that might be relatively close together. However, there is a huge network of bus routes, many run by Regional Verkehr Oberbayern (RVO), connecting virtually every small town in southern Bavaria, from Fuessen to Berchtesgaden.

The top of each column is the route number. Under that are comments. 'S' means the bus runs that route only on School days. Sometimes a route will have slightly different times on non-school days. This is shown by 'F' (School Free days).

Of importance here, some buses skip Wieskirche; some stop regardless. Some only stop if someone wants to get off, as noted by the half circle symbol.
