We will be traveling by rail from Oberammergau to Frankfurt. The trip has three segments but I purchased it as one ticket. Does anyone know whether there will be a problem if I skip the first two segments (Oberammergau to Murnau and Murnau to Munich) and start my trip in Munich? I know that if you do that on an airline they cancel your whole reservation when you don't show up at the first place.
Might or might not matter, but is it an open ticket (full fare) or is it a SparPreis (Savings Fare) discount ticket? Sometimes, particularly on short segments, the conductor doesn't get around to stamping you ticket, but the next segments are still valid.
I cannot say for sure, but I doubt the German Rail System is as sophisticated as airline check=in, or at least there is no formal check in, only a conductor checking your ticket.
It's not a full fare ticket-no changes and non-refundable. Also, they would not let me reserve seats on the first two segments (but did between Munich and Frankfurt) so does that mean it is like a commuter train? I'm hoping there is room for a suitcase somewhere.
In May, I traveled from Bad Schandau, east of Dresden, to Freising, by the Munich airport, with a discounted Saving Fare ticket. The first segment was on an EC (at least one segment of any Savings Fare ticket must be on an express train); the last two segments were on regional trains. The conductor never came by to check my ticket on the first segment, so it appeared that I had not taken the express train. However, the conductor on the next, regional, train had no problem with that. The trains from Oberammergau to Murnau and from Murnau to Munich are regional train; there are no reserved seats on these trains, but that doesn't mean that they are "commuter" trains. There will be luggage racks above the seats.
