German Rail Travel- reservations?

I'm trying to buy overnight point-to-point rail tickets from Dresden to Munich. When I go to book the train that I want it says under the reservation column that reservations are impossible. Does anyone know if this means that the reservation is already included in the ticket, or perhaps the reservations are all sold out? I need to buy this ticket, but I do not want to do so if a reservation is truly impossible. Thanks for any insight!

I can't see the problem. I am picking a random date is September and get all the way to the credit card page before I back out. What do you mean by overnight? I see there is a train that leaves at 10 pm and gets to Munich at 9:50 am next day, put it shows a 5 hour change time in Zwickau from midnight to 5 am. Maybe the station is locked at this time. Or by overnight do you mean you are traveling tonight? What is the date and time you want? You can send via private message if you don't want anyone else to see.

This is only a 5-6 hour trip. Why would you want an overnight train? Don't you want to see the country side and the scenery?

I just traveled by Rail from Dresden to Munich (Freising) with a change of trains in Hof. Both trains were regional ones. With only one exception I know of, reservations are not possible for regional trains. Note: RE, IRE, VBG, and ALX are all regional trains. I see some ICEs; those trains have reservable seats. Warning: unless you are taking a true night train (CNL or EN), any overnight connection will probably have an extended stopover in the middle of the night. BTW, it would really help if you told us what train train you are trying to reserve and what website you are using.

Hi, Normally, I would do Dresden-Munich by day. But if you want to go by night, arrive in Munich early in the morning, I would suggest: take the train Dresden-Berlin, a bit over two hrs, then take the Berlin-Munich CNL night train direct. For the CNL it's mandatory to reserve.
