German rail pass

I was just wondering if anybody knows much about the German railpass. Are the fares basically 'fixed' at a certain price or are there lower fares for the same package offered elsewhere.
Thanks

Tim, thanks for the reply and information. Our main objective is Oktoberfest in Munich the first week in October, about 10 days total. We'll land in Frankfurt but we have relatives around Dresden we want to visit and in Erfurt Thuringen too. We're not set yet on a schedule but we're looking into different possibilities. If we get a rail pass I wouldn't mind landing at the cheapest location since we'll go by train anyway. Thanks again for the information. Ralph

No matter from whom you buy a railpass, prices are pretty much fixed. Shipping costs, if imposed, may vary.

However, depending upon where and how often you travel by train in Germany, point-to-point tickets may be cheaper than a pass. Advance booking at www.bahn.de can can you discount fares on many long routes. Laender tickets allow individuals or groups of 2-5 people to travel all day on local trains in a specific region for one low price.

Where will you be traveling?
