Gate checked bags

By charging travelers to check bags, the airlines have created a situation that slows the boarding process down, at least for those in the back of the plane. On several recent flights, the gate personnel repeatedly emphasized that the plane was full and that all carry on luggage would have to be checked as soon as the overhead bins were filled to capacity as passengers boarded. The woman next to me commented that she had paid to check her bag on her outbound flight, but realized for her return flight that she might as well wait until it was her time to board because the airlines would gate check her bag for free if there was no room for her to carry it on. And turns out, that is exactly what happened.

The airlines make way too much money from charging for bags to be checked so I don't see that practice changing. What I do see possibly happening is airlines prohibiting a passenger from taking a carry on item that must go in the overhead bins without the payment of an additional fee. Some carriers are already strict about only allowing a traveler to take just one item without paying extra for a separate personal item.

As a committed carry on only person, I am going to change my practice (when I'm not paying extra to get seated on the plane earlier) and try to take a bag that can be squished enough to fit under the seat in front of me so I can avoid the gate check risk entirely. Unfortunately, that means no roller bag.

And you keep thinking that the airline is your friends and interested in your well being.

Go for it Paul!

I’ve been traveling personal item only for many trips. You can do it.

It’s so freeing to not worry if there is space for your bag. I think you’ll find that it’s easier to move around too.

Paul, ever found some equipment taking up most of your underseat space? Yeah, they're always one step ahead of you 😒.

Yeah, the metal boxes that I believe are for the latest entertainment systems seem to be in the way of where you want to put your feet, to say nothing of cramming in baggage or totes.

It's already happening. Many airlines now offer a basic fare that does not grant access to the overhead bin. If you want to take a bag to put in the overhead bin, you pay extra.

Who is doing this....Ryanair, Spirit, Frontier, Wizz Air are just a few. United on domestic routes.

Exactly. Good luck avoiding those entirely. And yes, some airlines are already charging for carryons. Spirit fees, for instance, for anything larger than 18"x14"x8":

https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Spirit_Airlines/baggage.php
Spirit Airlines’ (NK) baggage fee for one carry-on:
At booking: $35.00 USD
Before online web check-in:$45.00 USD
At online web check-in: $45.00 USD
At airport ticket counter: $55.00 USD
At airport gate: $65.00 USD

And they state that bulkhead seats won't accommodate underseat storage.

The equipment is a bit of a red herring.

The key is to get a thinner bag that will fit under the seat. So no, a 9” thick bag won’t fit. But a 7” thick bag will.

And let’s not forget that you can go online and find the seats without the entertainment systems.

Also, this is starting to go away with the newer planes. The new model is for people to bring their own devices and hook in to the airplane WiFi. That makes the plane lighter and it gets better fuel economy.

In short, this is a solvable problem.

I had a smaller secondary bag to check when I was coming back to France from home in OK in April. I knew it was going to cost, and that’s just part of the price of living overseas. It was a packaway Eddie Bauer duffle.

When I got to the Delta check in desk, and the attendant looked at how much it was going to cost me to check it (something like $90 ), she was horrified. She exclaimed to her colleagues and they told her that unfortunately that was correct given where I was headed.

Then another colleague chimed in and said You know what ? I am going to be up at the gate in 30 minutes, checking in bags for free — come see me then.

(Luckily I didn’t have any liquids in the extra bag, so I was able to get it through security. If not, I would have had to transfer to my other suitcase, or give to my mom and dad to take back home.)

So I did as she said, when I got upstairs for boarding, she printed a bag tag and I gave my bag to the agent on the gateway. And it showed up on the luggage belt at CDG the next morning with my suitcase!

I sent a vague thank you to Delta, mentioning the agent’s name, but when they wrote me for follow-up, i didn’t respond. I didn’t want to get her in trouble for having enabled me to avoid one of their fees!! But I appreciated her ingenuity and willingness to help. It’s nice flying out of your small hometown airport. (Although I will say, last time I flew out of LAX, the check-in agent took this same Eddie Bauer duffle and didn’t charge me either, so i keep getting lucky!! They just did it there at check-in though.
