Okay, I was just looking up the cost of a train ticket from Garmisch to Fuessen and found that even though it's less than 20 miles apart, it's over 2 hours to get there! Yikes. Does anyone know a quicker way to get there (is it worth it to rent a car?) We're staying in Garmisch for 5 days, and that's one of the day trips we were going to take.
As the crow flies, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Fuessen are close... but as you can see on the map, those pesky Alps cause you to drive out of the way...
Another option would be to take a tour bus from Garmsisch. I know the Edelweiss lodge offers bus tours, but I wouldn't stay there soley for that reason.
I would definitely rent a car for such a short journey. The drive is beautiful, and you can get to the castle ahead of the crowds. You might also want to consider making a reservation for the castle tours ahead of time online. You still have to pick up your tickets, but the line is much shorter and you are guaranteed the time you have requested.
Thanks for the advice. Actually, Tom, we looked into the tour with the Edelweiss. They're not very good salespeople, though! When I emailed them abou their tours, they suggested that we take public transportation and go on our own?!?! We are military ID holders, so we could go with them... But now that I see how long the train/bus ride is, I'm considering it whether they want us to come or not! : ) I will look into a rental, but car rentals are SO ridiculously expensive sometimes...
This is what they call a milk run - it stops at every town and crossing between here and there.
Its the school bus, the mail carrier, etc.
It's a beautiful area we enjoyed the ride.
