Garmisch to Neuschwanstein

Hello, does anyone have some recommendations on the best way to get from Garmisch to the castle at Neuschwanstein. Which would be best, renting a car in Garmisch and drive there, take a train from Garmisch to Vils, Austria and then a taxi, or a train up through Munich? Or any other suggestions There will be four of us traveling together. Thank you in advance, Lee

Using the "Plan Your Trip" section of this website, you can access the Deutsche Bahn website to check train and bus schedules from Garmisch to Fuessen.

By Rail: Take the train (1h:49)to the town of Füssen, then bus 9713 to Hohenschwangau. By car: Take the A7 to Füssen, then on to Hohenschwangau where you'll find parking for a 4 euro charge. From Hohenschwangau you can walk to the castle in 30 minutes. You can get within a 5 minute walk on horse-drawn carriage for 5 euros uphill and 2.50 euros on the return downhill. A Bus is also available from Schlosshotel Lisl, Neuschwansteinstraße in Hohenschwangau.

In Rick Steve's guidebook there is info on purchasing tickets for the castle. Have fun!

Hi Denise, we were there in Dec 08' and took the train from Nurnberg. It's a fun place, but as you see we're coming from a different direction. Do you know how long it takes to drive? Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. Lee

The best way to get from GaP to the castles at Hohenschwangau would be to take the 9:40 RVO bus (9606) via Oberammergau. That bus takes less than 2 hours and stops at the bus stop in Hohenschwangau, just down the hill from the ticket kiosk, about 5 minutes before Füssen Bhf.

Don't try to go to Füssen entirely by train, because the only train connections are via Munich or Kempten and really out of your way.

You can take the train to Reutte or Pfronten and the bus from there. The bus from Pfronten stops at the Füssen Bhf and (usually?) goes on to Hohenschwangau. I think if you take the bus from Reutte, you have to change buses at the Füssen Bhf. The buses to Hohenschwangau aren't always the same number, but they leave from Haltestelle (bus stop) 2 at the Bahnhof.

With four adults (over 14), you would be best to buy a €28 Bayern-Ticket in the GaP Bahnhof. That will cover all of your travel by regional train or bus for the day for all four of you. If you are a family (2 adults and your own children under 15), then an RVO Family Tagesticket for €21 would cover your trip by bus only for the day.

I've driven from GaP. Heading southwest from GaP to Lermoos, then north through Reutte, it takes about 45 minutes.
