Hi: Hubby and I will be arriving at the Garmisch Bhf at 12:58 on platform 3. We would like to catch the cogwheel train to the Zugspitze at 1:15. We would need to rent a luggage locker and then buy our Zugspitze tickets. Can we do all this and still catch the train? Seems a little tight? We don't want to buy tickets early in case it's a cloudy day. Thanks,
Kris
tom---do they walk through that little underpass to get to the zugspitzebahn? It has been 10+ years since I was there and can't remember that detail.
That station is very small. One of you could deal with stowing the luggage (make sure you have an assortment of coins) while the other purchases tickets for the train.
Thanks Lola!
And just so you're aware, the Zugspitzbahn departs from a different smaller station, but it's right next door.
Here (http://www.stationsdatenbank.bayern-takt.de/StationsdatenbankBEG/Steckbrief.html?lang=de&efz=8002187) is the station layout for Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Note that the lockers are in the station building, in the opposite direction from the platform to the passage to the Zugspitzebahnhof.
"tom-do they walk through that little underpass to get to the zugspitzebahn?" Yes, your memory is correct. Arriving from the direction of Munich, the Zugspitzebahn station is on the right, and the GaP station office is to the left.
Just FYI, I did the Garmisch-Zugspitze connection on 6/7/13, and the train to Garmisch arrived 2 hours late...yes 2 hours. This was because of a bus substitution due to flooding. I believe the flooding has subsided by now, but just double check before going.
