Need a little guidance. Looking at the bahn website. Travelling from Munich to Fussen and Fussen to Salzburg. After numerous tries was able to get the rate for the Munich to Fussen leg of the trip. When I enter Fussen to head towards Salzburg it automatically plugs in the following town "Fußenberg, Wenzenbach" which is in the opposite direction. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Here's what the problem is: On that website you must spell it "Fuessen", or you will not get to where you want to go. The correct spelling is Füssen but the short version of the long explanation is spell it "Fuessen" and it will get you to Füssen. And to score extra points with the website, spell Munich "Muenchen"--this spelling is not mandatory but the website will be impressed. But note that spelling Füssen "Fuessen" is not optional, that's mandatory, unless you want to go to Fussen (you don't).
No Mussen, no Fussen!
But ducken und runnen! ;)
B~
Andreas: Thank you for your efforts on behalf of us "ü challenged" folks over here!
By the way, you can use the Bayern ticket for Fuessen to Salzburg. 27 euro.
This has been coming up quite a lot of times. As Kent correctly stated, the letter "ü" and "u" are completely different in Germany and one does and cannot replace the other. If you cannot type "ü" you must type "ue" instead or else... Anyways, I've just emailed a sales representative of Deutsche Bahn German Rail of Bavaria I know with this problem suggesting that they add the spelling of "Fussen" as potential "misspelling" of Füssen to the data base lying behind their website. So if in a couple of months typing in "Fussen" on bahn.de actually leads you to Füssen maybe the Rick Steves forum has been able to make that happen...
Thanks for the info!
"And to score extra points with the website, spell Munich "Muenchen"--this spelling is not mandatory but the website will be impressed. "
LOL
And, if you really want to "impress" the website, use <alt>0252 (0252 on the numeric keypad) to get ü (München).
Linda,
I just got back from a trip to Germany/Austria. We travelled to Fuessen from Munich and then to Salzburg from there. When you travel from Fuessen to Salzburg you will go through Munich. Make sure to spell Fuessen as I have. Also, we used the Bayern ticket (27 Euro) which you can use to go to Salzburg. It is easy to buy from a ticket machine in the train station and you can buy them for any date since you determine the date you use the ticket when you purchase it. It has to be used after 9 am though and is for 2nd class on regional trains not the ICE. If you use this ticket make sure you write everyone's name on the back of it. I printed my dates of travel and all the train times from the DB bahn site and took them with me. It worked great to have the train schedule each day. It was always correct.
