I am joining a cruise in Venice but plan to arrive a day a head. What is the best way to get to a hotel from the airport?

Depends on where your hotel is located and how much you're willing to spend. A water taxi will take you directly to or very near your hotel, but is quite expensive. The Alilugana water buses go to the St. Marks area. Least expensive option is the bus to Piazzele Roma (near the train station) and then a vaporetto down the Grand Canal. Rick's guidebook should have details on these options.

There are numerous places to stay within walking distance of both the cruise terminals and the Piazzale Roma. CLICK HERE to see a bunch.
There are two bus lines that have regularly scheduled service from the Piazzale Rome to the Venice Marco Polo airport. ATVO from Stop D2 in the Piazalle Roma. Fare for this run, including luggage, is 3Euro. CLICK HERE for the schedule.
There is also a No. 5 public bus that makes the same run from Stop A1 in the Piazalle Roma. However, you have to take your luggage on the bus with you and there are no luggage racks.
