From Tuscany to Rome on a Sunday

We're staying in Pomarance. My original plan was to drop off my rental car in Livorno and take the train to Termini. The fact that I'm traveling on a Sunday has caused issues (car rental drop off in Livorno is closed.) My option now becomes driving to Pisa to get the train to Rome. By the time I'm done with this song and dance (drive north to go south, and spend a lot to do it) I'm beginning to think I should just drive to Rome, drop off the rental car at the airport there, and take a train to the city. I'm concerned about the drive - is driving around the airport terribly hectic (hoping Sunday would make it less so.) Also, any suggestions on where to stop for gas before I drop off the car if I do this so I don't burn all my not-taking-the-train savings on the rental car place charging me for returning an empty car? Thanks for reading,
Marisa

Marisa, you might look into dropping off your rental car in Orvieto. This is a very popular place to drop off the car on the way to Rome. You are not alone in not wanting to drive in Rome. The train station is near by and Rome is just over an hour away by train. The trains run frequently - even on Sunday.

Thank you Larry - I will definitely look into it - hopefully the rental car office in Orvieto will be open on a Sunday. Marisa

Siena has a drop box for rentals thru Kemwell, about 45m. Next closest would be Florence at around 70mi. Orvieto is closed on sundays.

Thank you, yes, traveling on a Sunday was maybe not the best thing to do, so driving to Rome it is for us. I really appreciate all of the input, you all are very generous with your time and knowledge. Marisa
