I need to go from Rome to Positano Italy on March 24, 2008. Can anyone tell me the best way to make the trip. I will be going with my wife and two (2) kids. I priced a car but, I would rather take a train, bus or ferry.
Thank you,
Ralph

Don't believe Amalfi Coast ferries start running as early as March 24, so your best bet using public transportation would be train from Rome to Naples (about 2 hours), Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento (about 70 min) and bus from Sorrento to Positano (about 45 min - leaves from in front of Sorrento train station). There are 2 bus stops in Positano. First is at top of town, and 2nd is at end of town and a short easy walk from Rick's recommended hotels along Via Colombo. Hotels may offer car service from Naples train station to Positano for about EUR 100. Circumvesuviana and bus for 4 would cost about EUR 25.
Take the rain from Rome to Naples. From Naples take the Circumvencia )local train) to Sorrento and then take the SITA bus to Positano.
It's not as complicated as it sounds, most likely, you will not be the only one making the trip.
Enjoy your trip to our favorite place.

Ralph, you didn't mention how old your kids are, but with four of you I would seriously consider renting a car. First of all, with more than two people it is almost always less expensive to drive, and changing trains and buses will be a hassle no matter what the kids' ages. I have made the drive twice, and it's pretty easy. Our most recent trip, last fall, we stayed at Hotel California, which has free inside parking.
