From Rome to Amalfi Coast and back to Rome

I have never been to the Amalfi coast and surrounding area. After I land in Rome I would like to find the best way to get there....I can stay about a week. Would you kmow if there is a boat that goes directly to that area? Where would be the best place to disembark? What boat line would be recommended? Do you think the train would be better? Just looking for suggestions. Also would like some hotel accomodations that would be recommended by you. Thank you so much.

Need more information - like - Where are you going? Town ?? Amalfi coast is an area and not a place. Mostly likely the train would work best.

No ferries or boats from the Rome airport area to Sorrento and further down the Amalfi Coast. The "best" is private transportation from the airport. Quite expensive. If by train, it's about 4.0hrs to get to Amalfi which is approximately in the center of the Amalfi Coast. You can take the train to Sorrento. From there, you need to take the SITA bus down the coast.

Thank you all for your input. Since I am leaving in March of 2013 I wanted to be sure I have researched everything beforehand. Your comments have certainly given me more information, and I really appreciate the time you took to respond. In song,
