We are planning a trip in June and prior to hooking up with a tour in Bayonne I plan on driving from Charles de Gaulle airport to Chartres to begin a five day journey southward through some areas from which my family originated. My question is: Is it better to travel by bus or train to Chartres and rent a car there or preferrable to rent a car at Charles de Gualle and drive to Chartres?

If you get jet lag and don't sleep well on a plane, it's wiser to not drive as soon as you arrive.
It's very easy to take an Air France bus to Gare Montparnasse where you can catch a direct train to Chartres. Visit the Cathedral, spend the night, and rent the car the next morning.
