Suggestions for traveling from the Marburg, Germany to Genoa/Sanremo, Italy.
I know we can fly from Frankfurt to Nice and take a train to Sanremo. Is there a good train ride that may take longer but would be enjoyable?

You can look up the schedule at www.bahn.com/en.
Looks like nearly a 14 hour trip with at least 3 train changes. Includes 2 long base tunnels that bore under the Alps. In this case, I vote for getting a plane from Frankfurt to Genoa. Train to Frankfurt airport, bus from Genoa airport to nearby train station, train to San Remo.
Flying to Nice is also an option with similar logistics.
