From London to Ireland - Train/Ferry

Will be landing in London, staying one day, and would like to take the train over to Wales to catch a ferry to Ireland. Any recommendations on which ferry City in England to go to? Can you rent a car at the ferry City in Ireland? How long of a trip is the train ride? All day? More than a day?

Budget car rental is available at Rosslare harbor (ferry from Fishguard), while Hertz and Enterprise are further away in Wexford; Enterprise is also present at Dún Laoghaire (ferry from Holyhead); see Google Maps. If you choose Enterprise, ask them to pick you up at the ferry dock, since they tend to offer that service.

Otherwise, your choice may also depend on your destination in Ireland. The last time I looked, Stena Line ferries served Dun Laoghaire–Holyhead and Rosslare–Fishguardand and Irish Ferries served Dublin–Holyhead and Rosslare–Pembroke.

Combined train/ferry tickets are sold at https://news.tfwrail.wales/.

How much time are you allotting all together, and how much time in Ireland? I believe, roughly, you can leave London at about 9:00 AM and be in Dublin around 6:00 PM (Train 4 or so hours, Ferry with check-in about the same); so an all day adventure and pretty much restricted to those times. Not a day trip, probably not worth it for two nights, so figure 3 or more nights minimum needed.

There are also cheap flights, probably 4 hours with travel to the airport, security, flight, etc. and you can likely get a variety of flight times.
