Your post it a bit confusing. "We depart from Frankfurt". I assume you mean you are flying into Frankfurt from London. What part of the Rhein do you want to see and how long to you intend to stay. The best part of the Rhein, IMO, is the part from Bacharach to St. Goar. You can easily get to Bacharach and back from St Goar by train. Use the German Rail (Bahn) website to find schedules.

Sorry for creating confusion. We fly from London. We could fly into any German town. We leave for home from Frankfurt. We don't know the Rhine at all. Sorry for the ignorance. We will study Rick's book. We know about Ludwig's castle. We want to spend one day. Thank you for your reply.

OK, if you are flying out of Frankfurt and can fly into any German town, how about into Bonn and out of Frankfurt. That way, you can go along the Rhein to Frankfurt. As long as you are using the train, you could take a boat from St. Goar to Bacharach, or Bingen, and continue onward to Frankfurt. But, flying into Frankfurt, then taking the train to Bacharach and the boat to St. Goar, then the train back to Frankfurt might work better.

You could fly into Frankfurt, Köln/Bonn or Düsseldorf. The first two would be more convenient.

There is easyjet.com from London Gatwick to Cologne. There is Ryanair.com from London Stansted to either Weeze (they call it Düsseldorf Niederrhein), it's by the Rhine river close to the Dutch border... plenty of Rhine river cruises depart from Düsseldorf where there is a shuttle bus to. But keep in mind the really expensive fares to get from London to Stansted airport! There also is Ryanair to Hahn (they call it Frankfurt Hahn) which is only 15 minutes from Bernkastel-Kues in the Mosel river valley. And there is Lufthansa and British Airways from London City and London Heathrow to Düsseldorf and Frankfurt. There is Germanwings.com from Heathrow and Gatwick to Cologne... And there is AirBerlin.com from Stansted to Cologne and to Düsseldorf. Check fares with Momondo...
